Ok, I’m not trying to point any fingers here.

Since we’re talking team not family, let’s look at some sports franchises.

The places where the owners don’t invest, don’t build a culture, don’t pay their best players, never win! (As a lifelong Jets fan and a lifelong Yankees fan, you could not have more diametrically opposed owners than the Hess Family and the Steinbrenner Family.)

Business is no different.

If you do not have enough equipment, the right equipment, can’t pay for average talent, you’ll never win. Sure, you’re really good, you’ll make it to the top X%. You’ll never win.

Find the owner or corporation that invests in the correct equipment, takes care of their team, and keeps their best players.

Oh, and a side note. HR is about to catch a stray while discussing ownership.

If a company has a mission or value statement that says, “We put our People First”, it’s for advertising, it’s not real.

If the company has a division called PeopleFirst. It’s for advertising, it’s not real.

I can’t think of a company that truly puts their people first. They can’t. They’d go out of business. They can care about their people. They can do what they can for them, but they’ll never actually put people first.

Find that company that says “We do our best with our team” or “We care” it’s a standard they can live up to as opposed to lip service.
