There is a scene in a movie from the early 2000’s, Robots. The lead character says, “See a need, fill a need.” My 2nd CEO, Patrick Doyle says, “Go fix something.” If you do either of those, your actions are not transactional. You are not performing a task for the perceived payback but instead because it is broken and should not be.

Stay away from the emotional bank account. Keep towards doing what is right. Sometimes, that will mean doing something you may not want, like disciplining a teammate or terminating employment. If you’re doing it because it is best for them and you, then make the tough call. If you’re going to ask a teammate to perform a task, like scrub the walls, explain why and why them.
